https://proceeding-icolp.fbs.unp.ac.id/index.php/icolp/article/view/207

This conceptual paper proposes a novel framework for fostering metacognitive skills in language learners through AI-human dialogues, presenting a new paradigm for language education in the 21st century. As generative AI technologies advance, their potential to revolutionise language learning remains largely untapped, particularly in developing higher-order thinking skills. This study addresses the critical question: How can AI-human dialogues be leveraged to foster metacognitive skills in language learners? Through a comprehensive literature review and conceptual analysis, we develop a framework that integrates AI capabilities with established metacognitive strategies. The proposed framework comprises five key components: Reflective Questioning, Strategy Awareness, Progress Monitoring, Error Analysis, and Adaptive Challenges. Each component is designed to engage learners in deep, personalised metacognitive processes, facilitated by AI's ability to model strategies, provide immediate feedback, and adapt to individual learning patterns. This paper discusses the potential benefits of the framework, including enhanced self-regulated learning, improved language acquisition efficiency, and increased learner autonomy. It also addresses challenges and ethical considerations, such as balancing AI guidance and learner independence and ensuring privacy in AI-human interactions. By presenting this innovative approach, we aim to stimulate further research and practical applications in the field, ultimately contributing to more effective and personalised language learning experiences in the AI era.
FX. https://proceeding-icolp.fbs.unp.ac.id/index.php/icolp/article/view/223

Individual differences in the development of content-based strategies in English language learning. This study aims to explore individual differences in the development of content-based English learning strategies. With the increasing need for English language acquisition, especially in the context of content-based learning (CBL), it is important to understand how factors such as learning style, motivation, and cultural background affect the way students learn. Data shows that only 30% of the Indonesian population can communicate well in English (BPS, 2022), signaling the need for a more effective approach. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this research analyzes data using the Literature Study Technique by collecting and reviewing from various literature data which is then connected to the research to get answers to this problem. The results showed that strategies tailored to individual needs can increase the effectiveness of English language learning and can also provide insights for educators in designing curricula that are more inclusive and responsive to the needs of each student
Intan Puspita

https://proceeding-icolp.fbs.unp.ac.id/index.php/icolp/article/view/198

This study examines the phenomenon of language shift among Chinese Indonesian students in Taiwan, focusing on their Mandarin Chinese language proficiency and language preferences. Using a quantitative approach, data were collected through language tests and questionnaires. The participants comprised 118 Chinese Indonesian university students in Taiwan. Fishman's (1964) theory of language shift and his (1972) theory of language use domains provide the theoretical framework for this research. The findings indicate that a language shift is occurring among Chinese Indonesian students, with 49% of participants no longer using Mandarin Chinese and only 10% actively using it. Their proficiency in Mandarin Chinese varies, ranging from beginner to intermediate and advanced levels. These results suggest that language shift is more likely to occur in migrant minority groups, especially when the host community or dominant society exerts significant influence on the minority group. As a result, the vitality of Mandarin Chinese is being challenged among Chinese Indonesians in Taiwan. The study recommends that minority language speakers and researchers take proactive measures to preserve their native languages.

Elsa Wahyuni Putri

https://proceeding-icolp.fbs.unp.ac.id/index.php/icolp/article/view/228

Studies on teaching strategies in language learning have been extensively conducted by scholars to facilitate classroom interaction and active learning activities, especially group presentations. However, studies on lecturers' facilitation strategies are rarely found in the literature. This research aims to investigate the rhetorical patterns in lecturers' facilitation strategies in group presentations in language classrooms in higher education. This discourse analysis study used a qualitative approach conducted over two semesters. Data were gathered through participant observation. The data were analyzed qualitatively using the rhetorical step technique. The results show that language lecturers employed three facilitation strategies in group presentations in language classrooms: GQTR (Group Presentation-Question and Answer-Lecturer’s Reinforcement), GCAPQLR (Group Presentation-Comments and Additions-Presenters Response-Question and Answer-Lecturer’s Reinforcement), dan GCCARQLR (Group Presentation-Contributor-Comments and Addition-Response-Questions-Lecturer’s Reinforcement). The study concludes that these facilitation strategies are crucial for fostering a dynamic learning environment, promoting active engagement, and enhancing interaction among students. The pedagogical implications suggest that language instructors can improve classroom interaction and active learning by implementing these strategies, which can also help develop students' speaking, listening, and analytical skills during group presentations.
Dedi Jasrial

https://proceeding-icolp.fbs.unp.ac.id/index.php/icolp/article/view/210

This article explores how collaborative learning changes the course of English language acquisition through group activities and peer feedback. In the context of emerging educational paradigms, which have steadily shifted from teacher-centred methods to more student-centred approaches, collaborative learning appears to be one such dynamic framework that fosters interaction, communication, and critical thinking among learners. The role of group activities in language learning aligns closely with Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, as these activities enable students to practice and internalize new language forms within interactive social settings. The article elaborates on several advantages of collaborative learning: enhanced language skills, increased motivation and improved interpersonal skills. Some of the problem areas that usually present themselves as tricky around collaborative learning are those to do with unequal participation and different proficiency levels. The strategic solutions, educators can constructively foster a collaborative classroom that then enables students and prepares them for real-world communication. introducing collaborative practices into the learning of the English language would therefore enhance not only a better educative experience but also one of community and shared growth among learners.

Syahmina

https://proceeding-icolp.fbs.unp.ac.id/index.php/icolp/article/view/226

This study examines Indonesian university students' perspectives on paraphrasing English texts, both independently and with ChatGPT's support. This investigation addresses a gap in the literature and highlights the need to understand how students approach paraphrasing tasks in different contexts. Using a mixed-method research design, 50 students were surveyed, and 15 participated in follow-up interviews. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative data were explored through thematic analysis. Findings reveal that students often lack confidence when paraphrasing independently, citing limited vocabulary and grammatical challenges as key barriers. Many students also reported low motivation to put in personal effort when practicing paraphrasing. In contrast, opinions on using ChatGPT were mixed. While some appreciated its ability to produce grammatically flawless paraphrases, believing it outperformed their own efforts, others criticised its outputs for being too similar to the original text, despite their grammatical accuracy. A recurring concern was the risk of over-reliance on ChatGPT, with several students noting that frequent use could undermine their motivation and effort to improve their language skills independently. Despite its limited generalisability, this study highlights the importance of thoughtfully integrating AI tools like ChatGPT in EFL education to enhance, rather than replace, active learning and skill development.
Rentauli Mariah Silalahi

2024-11-222024-11-22412534The Role of Axiology in Differentiated Language Learning
https://proceeding-icolp.fbs.unp.ac.id/index.php/icolp/article/view/215

Differentiated language learning is expected to meet the diverse learning needs of students in terms of abilities, interests, learning styles and backgrounds. In this approach, teachers adjust teaching methods, teaching materials, and learning activities to maximize the potential of each student individually, rather than using one method that is the same for all students. The study of axiology towards differentiated language learning starts from the understanding of axiology as a branch of philosophy that studies values and evaluation. This research reveals the role of axiology towards differentiated language learning so that it can appreciate the diversity of students' learning styles, encourage ethical values and social responsibility, foster the value of independence and creativity, encourage self-reflection and value-based learning and humanizing learning. This research uses the literature study method and then examines all the phenomena that appear in this study. Differentiated learning is expected to accommodate students' learning needs in the Merdeka Curriculum. Therefore, educators, researchers, and educational policymakers are urged to pay attention to and consider the philosophical basis in every language learning policy and practice so that differentiated language learning can maximize the potential of each student, accommodate individual differences, increase student involvement and improve overall learning outcomes.
Idra PutriM. https://proceeding-icolp.fbs.unp.ac.id/index.php/icolp/article/view/206

This study investigates the challenges faced by sports education programs in delivering effective English language instruction due to a lack of specialized textbooks. Through qualitative interviews with department heads and English lecturers from STKIP Muhammadiyah Sungai Penuh, Universitas Muhammadiyah Muara Bungo, and Universitas Dharmas Indonesia, the research reveals that educators rely on general English textbooks, online articles, and multimedia resources to teach English for sports purposes. While these alternative materials provide relevant content, the absence of dedicated textbooks places a significant burden on lecturers, who must compile and adapt resources themselves. The findings underscore the need for institutions to prioritize the development of tailored textbooks that address the unique linguistic and communicative demands of the sports industry. This research highlights the importance of institutional support in creating comprehensive, relevant educational resources that enhance both teaching effectiveness and student learning outcomes in sports education
Mike Nurmalia SariM. https://proceeding-icolp.fbs.unp.ac.id/index.php/icolp/article/view/222

The Merdeka Curriculum is the current Indonesian curriculum that suggests the implementation of Differentiated Learning (DL) to cater to students with different learning styles, needs, and abilities. This study was designed to assess Teacher’s understanding of DL concepts and challenges in implementing DL for English Classes at SMP Sekolah Penggerak. This study used a descriptive qualitative research design. The data of the study were collected through in-depth interviews. The collected data were then analysed by using content analysis The findings revealed that there is a strong theoretical grasp of DL principles among teachers, including the importance of accommodating diverse student needs, interests, and learning styles, and the use of technology to support these needs. Teachers acknowledged the value of conducting needs analyses to tailor their instructional strategies effectively. However, several practical challenges were revealed, including managing large class sizes, the substantial time and effort required for lesson preparation, and a lack of collaborative support among colleagues. These factors hinder the effective application of differentiated learning in the classroom. The study concludes that while teachers possess a solid foundational understanding of DL, addressing the identified challenges through strategic planning, professional development, and enhanced collaboration is crucial for bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical implementation. This research provides insights into the necessary steps for improving the practice of differentiated learning, thereby better supporting diverse student needs in primary education. Future research can focus on developing and testing the effectiveness of these recommended strategies, particularly when integrated with the use of technology. Such research would be valuable in refining these strategies and providing further guidance for schools in successfully implementing differentiated learning
Siska Oktawidya Wati Jumrawarsi

https://proceeding-icolp.fbs.unp.ac.id/index.php/icolp/article/view/220

The development of language skills—listening, reading, speaking, and writing—primarily depends on vocabulary proficiency. However, students still find it challenging to retain the vocabulary. Thus, the implementation of captivating, appealing, and interactive activities by teachers in language training is crucial for improving vocabulary skills. The Task-based approach is an effective strategy for teaching vocabulary. This approach prioritizes executing meaningful and authentic tasks in language learning activities. Also, the students engage in exercises or language assignments and simulate real-life situations. Therefore, this study employed a qualitative method to examine previous research on the effects of a task-based approach on vocabulary skill improvement. The investigation revealed that the task-based approach can improve the students’ vocabulary skills and the students had a positive view of the task-based approach for boosting their vocabulary. Consequently, the study recommended that teachers strategically implement a task-based approach to facilitate learners' acquisition of an extensive vocabulary.

Fatma

https://proceeding-icolp.fbs.unp.ac.id/index.php/icolp/article/view/195

This study investigates the effectiveness of e-learning-based teaching and learning materials (TLMs) in enhancing academic language skills in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses. A mixed-methods design was employed, involving 120 undergraduate students from various proficiency levels and 10 EAP instructors. Quantitative data were collected through pre- and post-course EAP proficiency tests and a student satisfaction survey, while qualitative data were gathered via semi-structured interviews with students and instructors. The results revealed a significant improvement in students' overall proficiency, particularly in listening and speaking skills, with interactive e-learning features and video-based resources showing the greatest effectiveness. However, challenges emerged in teaching academic writing, where the lack of real-time feedback limited student progress. Instructor feedback highlighted the need for a blended learning approach, combining e-learning with face-to-face instruction to improve the teaching of complex skills. The findings suggest that while e-learning tools offer considerable benefits, particularly in engagement and accessibility, there are limitations in areas that require more personalized guidance. The study contributes to the growing body of research on e-learning in EAP and provides practical implications for course designers and educators aiming to optimize digital resources for academic language learning.
Nila KencanaElva UtamiYunevaFevi Wira CitraEdwar
