https://proceeding-icolp.fbs.unp.ac.id/index.php/icolp/article/view/128

This study presents an analysis of idiomatic expressions within the film "Inglourious Basterds" (2009), employing the categorization framework established by O'Dell and McCarthy (2010). The analysis commenced with a comprehensive investigation into the meanings and contextual nuances of the identified idioms. Then, a classification system was applied to categorize the idiomatous expressions into four categories, Similes, Proverbs, Euphemisms, and Clichés as well as Fixed Statements. Furthermore, the meaning of each idiom was elucidated. The use of clichés can be seen as a clever device for enhancing character depth and cultural references, thereby contributing to the overall richness of the storytelling. This study highlights the meticulous attention to linguistic detail employed by the creators of the film. The utilization of expression in the film serves to augment the storytelling, captivate the audience, and evoke a culturally vibrant and genuine setting..
Muhammad Bintang RahmadinataNurul Fadhillah

https://proceeding-icolp.fbs.unp.ac.id/index.php/icolp/article/view/161

This paper explores the role of focus on form (FoF) in second language learning, which is a topic of debate among researchers. The paper aims to highlight the ways in which form-focused instruction can contribute to the development of communicative ability, which is the primary goal of second language learning, as well as the contradictions to this idea. The writer use review literature as method for this paper. The paper reviews the literature on the basis for FoF, intentional and unintentional ways for FoF, and communicative ability and FoF. The research suggests that FoF may not be the best method for achieving the primary goal of second language learning, but it can still be useful in certain contexts and for certain learners. The paper concludes that language teachers should be aware of the potential benefits and drawbacks of FoF when designing their lesson plans. The paper provides practical insights for ELT teachers and researchers interested in applied linguistics. The implications of this research are that language teachers should consider the advantages and disadvantages of FoF when deciding whether or not to incorporate it into their lesson plans
Afina Ulya Taufiq, S.Pd

https://proceeding-icolp.fbs.unp.ac.id/index.php/icolp/article/view/134

For students, studying English as a foreign language is a challenge. Students' achievement while learning English is influenced by effective language learning strategies, particularly when it comes to writing. Students benefit from direct strategies since they help in the storing and retrieval of knowledge. The aim of this study is to identify the different types of direct language learning strategies that English language education students use when writing analytical exposition texts, as well as the extent to which these strategies are applied. This study is qualitative research. Data were gathered via interviews and questionnaires. There are three different strategies categorized. Based on Oxford (1990) classified direct strategies into three categories: memory, cognitive, and compensatory. These strategies are applied directly. The second-year English Education Department students of Bung Hatta University in Padang are the focus of this study. There were 28 students involved in this research. The findings demonstrated that most students used memory strategies. The majority of the time, the students employed memory strategies to commit terms from analytical exposition texts to memory. The compensation strategies that are classified as often utilized come next. In order to keep creating analytical exposition texts, students employ compensatory strategies. They swap out challenging terms for synonyms or more comparable ones. The next kind of cognitive strategies are those that are utilized sometimes. As a result, students employ memory strategies the most frequently. Through the use of several direct strategies, students can develop their writing fluency in analytical exposition texts
Wahyuni Lidya Putri

https://proceeding-icolp.fbs.unp.ac.id/index.php/icolp/article/view/166

The utilization of informal language, commonly referred to as slang, constitutes a dynamic and ever-changing social phenomenon, reflecting the intricate interplay between language and culture. This research study delves into the specific manifestations of slang nomenclature found in the cinematic work "Django Unchained." To achieve this, the study adopts the classifications outlined by renowned linguists Bloomfield (1933) and Guth (1962). Through meticulous analysis, the research discerns five distinct categories of slang employed within the film: abbreviations (such as "O.B." signifying an individual's initials), truncated forms (for instance, "kinda" in lieu of "kind of"), interjections (like "bravo," used to convey approval), figurative expressions (such as "goddamn," indicating frustration), and nicknames (like "fancy pants," used to mock someone's attire). The prevalent linguistic feature observed in the film is the use of shortened forms, highlighting a penchant for succinct communication within casual environments. Abbreviations are infrequently utilized, implying the movie's adherence to a more formal discourse. Notably, the absence of comical mispronunciations among the characters indicates precise pronunciation. This analytical examination provides valuable insights into the varied linguistic evolutions present within slang, underscoring its malleability and its responsiveness to societal influences.
Fauzan NajibMuhammad IlhamNurul Fadhillah

This analytical examination provides valuable insights into the varied linguistic evolutions present within slang, underscoring its malleability and its responsiveness to societal influences
AfryansyahDarwin EffendiKomariah Hawa

This study aims to reveal the problems faced by teachers in implementing the Merdeka Curriculum in English classrooms and the problems found by English teachers based on length of teaching and employment status. This study employed mixed methods as the research design. The samples in this study were English teachers who taught in grades 7 and 10 at Sekolah Penggerak batches 1 and 2 in Bengkulu Province. Data collection was conducted using interviews and questionnaires. The questionnaire was made based on Permendikbud Number 16 of 2022 concerning education process standards, which was then validated by experts. The study revealed that the problems English teachers faced in implementing the Merdeka curriculum fell into a fairly difficult category in three aspects: planning, implementing, and assessing the learning process. English teachers most often find problems during the implementation of the learning process, with a percentage of 35% and a weighted mean of 2.48. This could be due to the fact that they are in the switching phase from the 2013 to the Merdeka curriculum, which makes it difficult to adapt to the new curriculum. However, teachers who found fewer problems were those who had taught for more than 10 years and were certified teachers. This might imply that the certification program has had an impact on teachers' quality.
Ildi KurniawanLestary HamdaniMei Hardiah

https://proceeding-icolp.fbs.unp.ac.id/index.php/icolp/article/view/133

While integrated learning is not a novel concept, it continues to capture attention. For instance, in elementary schools, merging English content with science is gaining traction. Successful implementation requires innovative media and relevant approaches. This study explores the effect of employing digital simulation media using a Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach on sixth-grade students' comprehension of science-themed English texts. This research, employing a quasi-experiment with a one-group pretest-posttest design, involved 17 elementary school students. They underwent pretest, treatment, and posttest stages, with tests as the main data collection tool, validated and deemed suitable for use. Statistical analysis using the t-test in the SPSS software revealed a p-value of < 0.001, lower than 0.05, leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis. In essence, the use of digital simulation media with a CLIL approach significantly influences students' ability to understand science-themed English texts. Pedagogically, these findings suggest teaching alternatives with the potential to enhance both reading skills and science understanding. https://proceeding-icolp.fbs.unp.ac.id/index.php/icolp/article/view/165

This paper overviews some of the domains of application of micro-level language planning approaches to foster multilingual education. It examines the language planning of local agents and the contexts in which their work contributes to multilingual education, either to expand or limit educational possibilities. It identifies four broad contexts of language planning activity in which local agents work: the local implementation of macro-level policy, contestation of macro-level policy, addressing local needs in the absence of macro-level policy and opening new possibilities for developing multilingualism. These contexts provide a way of framing the contribution that micro language planning work and local agents can make to multilingual education.
Dony EfrizaAgustinaJufrizalYelia
